Sympathy Cards - What to Say?

Sympathy Cards - What to Say?

When my mom passed after a long difficult illness, a friend wrote: I hope the joy of her memory when she was well is a comfort at this time.

What a relief it was to read that passage from a friend. I promptly comforted myself with loving memories of my mom. She had a great sense of humor and taught me that to laugh was a gift one could share freely and is infectious.  I have written that phrase or something similar in many cards over the years.

I buy cards from a card maker that hand silk screens all their cards, Great Arrow Graphics in Buffalo, New York. Here are some phrases from inside their sympathy cards.  A time of sadness and loss is often a time where minimal words are needed. Sometimes just the gesture of sending a card that says Love, and your name is enough.

Here are some phrases you might use:

  • Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings in heaven
Where the love of our lost ones pours through and
Shines down upon us to let us know that they are happy…
    Inuit Proverb
  • In loving memory of a life well lived
  • May peace surround you
  • Wishing you peace at this time of sadness
  • May cherished memories fill your heart

I find these phrases might open a memory in your mind that is comforting or just the card coming through the magic that is mail with your name on it, might be enough at this difficult, often overwhelming time.

I love mail because it takes a little effort, and that effort often delivers beyond our expectations. Our words might just land at exactly the right spot at the right time.
