What do I say to Frank Zappa?
Once I was at a club in New York called AM PM with a group of friends, one of those friends’ sister was married to Peter Frampton. Frank Zappa was also in our group that night. I was dancing with Mr. Frampton and he was shorter than me. I recall feeling self-conscious. While I was dancing, I wracked my brain for something witty or anything to say to Frank Zappa. This was challenging. He was on a bar stool. The club was full. He did not drink or do drugs. I saw him as a legend on a chair. Finally, I said, “Your records got me through college.” We used to tie dry cleaner bags in carefully spaced knots, hang them from our dorm room ceiling, and light the bottoms on fire. We would put a pan of water under them and turn out the lights, and put on a Frank Zappa record. The burning dry cleaner bags made a sound as they dripped into the water. They were called Zilch Bombs. The sound was zilch, zilch, zilch and the burning plastic smell, yikes, but the colors were exciting. After I told him his music got me through college, he kissed me. A sweet off to the side of my cheek kiss. I remember that night.
